CABEZA LLENA Cuba 1948 is a rare survivor from a bygone chapter of Cuban rum history. Distilled in 1948, during the island’s golden age of cane-sugar production, this release recalls the legendary Hoy Como Ayer Cuba 1956 bottling from LMDW’s 2025 Creations Catalogue, Foundations, named after the work of Cuban artist, Aconcha. Its name, CABEZA LLENA, is likewise inspired by one of her pieces, bridging Cuban cultural memory with the island’s long-standing rum tradition. The origins of this rum are cloaked in mystery. All identifying traces of its distillery have been lost to time, erased by decades of ageing in Cuba’s tropical climate. A radiocarbon dating analysis confirms that the spirit was produced before 1955, placing it firmly in the pre-revolution era, a peeriod when Cuba’s great houses, such as Bacardi, Ron Matusalem, and Arechabala (now Havana Club) dominated production, alongside smaller regional distilleries like Ron Perla del Norte, Ron Caney, Ron Vayadero and Casa Guaray. Aged entirely under intense tropical conditions, CABEZA LLENA offers a stunning evocation of pre-revolution Cuban rum: sweet wine rancio, vibrant aromatics, and remarkable freshness despite more than seven decades of maturation. The flavour and aroma palette has not developed a single wrinkle; instead, it carries the luminous, full-bodied expressiveness that defined Cuba’s finest rums of the era. A true piece of liquid history, CABEZA LLENA Cuba 1948 stands as one of the last known bottlings of pre-revolution Cuban rum, a rare chance to taste the island’s past, preserved against all odds.
