The name Shakyamuni comes from Sanskrit, meaning “Sage of the Shakya,” and refers to Siddhartha Gautama, who is said to have been born a prince in Shakya. The Sage sits on a single lotus base, also known as Padmasana, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening, as the lotus flower blooms above the muddy waters. This meditative Buddha sits peacefully, his right hand extended down towards the ground in the earth touching mudra, Bhumisparsha Mudra, capturing the moment he called upon the Earth to witness his triumph over the temptations of illusion.
